Worried About Identity Theft? Follow These 5 Tips

Identity theft is something all of us should be concerned with, so we all need to be taking the appropriate precautions to make sure our identities are safe. You are the only one who is truly concerned about the security of your identity, so it is important that you are making use of common sense to ensure you don’t become ID thefts next victim. You may also consider making use of an LifeLock reviews solution.

Because you are in control of the security of your identity, you really should look hard at the following suggestions. You might also want to consider making use of a identity theft solutions plan.

1. Personal information in mail: A lot of personal information is found in your daily mail. This includes statements from financial institutions and credit card applications which all can be used to steal your identity. You should think about opting out of getting applications for credit and begin getting financial institution statements delivered electronically, which can eliminate a lot of your personal information from the regular mail.

2. Use a debit card in place of credit card: Every time you use your debit card as a charge card, you are opening yourself up to have your account information get into the hands of a criminal. Consider that purchases made with your debit card cause money to come out of your bank account very quickly, so if you fall victim to a criminal, your money could be gone very quickly. Consider using a regular charge card instead since the funds aren’t taken straight from your savings or checking account.

3. Writing checks: Every time you write a check for a purchase, your checking and routing number is available for anybody to see. This is sometimes all a criminal needs to steal your money. Quit writing checks - pay with a credit card or electronically.

4. Temporary credit card numbers: A lot of banks are offering temporary credit card numbers. These are issued as a one-time use credit card number that is then used to facilitate purchases online. This keeps the actual credit card information out of the hands of thieves.

5. Copy personal information: Keep a record of all of your banking account numbers, which will include your credit card numbers. Also, you need to keep copies of important documents of personal nature like your passport and anything else of importance. This information will be necessary if you ever find that any of these documents are lost, or if you ever become a victim of ID theft.

If you follow the above suggestions, you are well on your way to protecting your identity. Another step you should consider is to subscribe to a identity fraud protection solution. This will assist in securing your identity so that you never become a victim of identity theft.

How to Go About Fixing A Credit Report

Fixing a credit report starts with reading it carefully. You can get a copy of your credit report for free online; just search for “free credit report”. You can get a free copy of your credit report once a year; also, if you are denied credit on the basis of your credit report, you may then request a free credit report from that credit reporting bureau (this must be done in writing within 30 days of the denial of credit).

Reading your credit report should answer the question of why you were turned down. However, how can you set things right again? What if there is something inaccurate on your report or something which while not inaccurate, is unfair?

You can dispute any item on your credit report by writing to the credit agency. They will have to investigate within 30 days. You should send your dispute via certified mail and include any supporting documentation (for example, canceled checks and the like).

In the course of their investigation, the credit agency has to contact the business which reported the inaccurate item. If the agency does not receive proof that the debt is valid within 14 days, they will remove this item from your credit report. They will send you an updated copy of your credit report and if you request, a copy of this new report will also be furnished to any creditor who has seen your report in the previous six months. Remember though, you have to ask for this since the agency will not do this otherwise.

A lot of creditors won’t bother to write back to the credit agency if the item in dispute is less than $500 or is over a year old. Fixing a credit report can be done, even if the items contained are accurate. If you don’t manage to have the item removed the first time, you can submit another dispute in 30 days.

If you cannot have an item removed, you will be allowed to provide a short explanation of the item (this can be up to 100 words long). This explanation will be viewable to any prospective creditor who looks at your credit report.

If there is a long history of late payments and defaults, fixing a credit report can be a long term project. However, you can often have some items removed and add explanations of others. This kind of effort will go along way in helping to repair your credit report.
